Barbara Mutch with her book 'The Housemaid's Daughter'Since my last update about 6 months ago, much has happened in the life of my novel, The Housemaid’s Daughter. In the UK the hardback has been making strong progress, while the international trade paperback has been breaking new ground in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Singapore. The e-book for Kindle and tablet e.g. iPad, has a growing global following, and the audio book is now available for those who prefer to listen – read by a charming English actress who has handled the challenging “foreign” words with great aplomb.

Formal reviews and coverage have been very complimentary, from a book-of-the-month selection in Canada’s leading women’s magazine, to best read selections in the UK, and an article in the Guardian newspaper. The Dutch edition, De Kleur Van Haar Hart has had great reviews, and I am waiting to receive feedback on the Icelandic version, published last month (I will need serious help with translation back into English!) Do have a look at the reviews on Amazon to get a sense of the reader response so far, or visit and the blog which describes the journey of the book in different parts of the world.

And I am thrilled to say that today, the 3rd of January, the UK paperback was published (see new cover in the pic). The French and German translations are due out later in 2013, and the important US edition will be published by St Martin’s Press in the summer. Translations into Spanish, Italian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Chinese (!) will follow.

So… 2013 is set to be a busy and fascinating year. One of the unexpected pleasures in all this has been to meet – sometimes physically, most often via the Internet – new friends who have enjoyed the book. And, of course, renewing contact with old friends who have spotted it and realised they knew me!

As ever, thank you so much for your enthusiasm for the book, your willingness to spread the word and for posting photos of The Housemaid’s Daughter in your part of the world on Facebook. Please keep up the good work by sharing the links above!

All best wishes for a happy and healthy 2013

Barbara Mutch
