Jan 29 BRAD WALLACE-BRADLEY: “Voyages aboard the ‘RSA’ to the Southern Oceans” Some of Brad’s slides taken on voyages 40 years ago to the SANAE base on the Princess Martha coast in the King Haakon Vll Sea, Antarctica.
Feb 26 ‘DUMPS’ WILLIS MEMORIAL LECTURE: JAMES WILLIS shares personal recollections of his father as a book collector.
March 26 BOET DOMMISSE: “St Francis Church – its 200 year History, Architecture and Artefacts” An illustrated lecture with musical interlude. NOTE: The lecture will be in St Francis Church (alongside the Museum) and will be followed by the launch of the book “The Six Saints of Simon’s Town” Admission by donation.
April 30 DAVID ERICKSON: “Exploring the Harbour Breakwater Lighthouse” followed by the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE SIMON’S TOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY. No admission charge.
May 28 ROGER SMITH: “Dawn of the Age of Dinosaurs in Antarctica” The aim of the project Roger will be talking about intends to find out more about how terrestrial tetrapods managed to survive the End-Permian mass extinction and flourish in the Antarctic portion of southern Gondwana during the Triassic Period. (Postponed from 2013).
June 25 DAPHNE WESSELO: Power Point presentation of her “Trip to Israel” followed by the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE SIMON’S TOWN MUSEUM. No admission charge.
July 30 PATRICK CARDWELL: “Seabirding out of Simon’s Town” Patrick is a Bird Life SA Specialist Guide who has personally seen nearly all Southern Africa’s bird species, the balance of which comprise vagrants still on his wanted list!
Aug 27 CHRIS MOLYNEUX: “From the Hearse’s Mouth!” An interesting look at funerals over the past 200 years.
Sept 24 MARTIN FINE: “Simon van der Stel – after whom Simon’s Town is named” This lecture will be followed by the presentation to the museum of a painting of Simon van der Stel by Estelle Byrne, with snacks and drinks thereafter.
Oct 29 UTE SEEMANN: “The Skeletons of the S.A. Police Museum at Muizenberg” Experts have traced the origins of the skeletons found to the period between 1850 and 1870.
Nov 26 HERB FARROW: “The Delville Wood Memorial” and the founding of the War Graves Commission in which Rudyard Kipling was also involved.
