Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head created a beautiful backdrop to the start of Race 4 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race from Cape Town to Albany in Australia today.

A group of us were fortunate to be invited to watch the start of the race from a friend’s yacht, and what a thrilling experience it was. Conditions were perfect for us novice “yachties” – blue sunny skies, a gentle breeze and a clear, gently rolling azure ocean. The appearance of three curious Southern Right whales added to the bliss.

While we relaxed and savoured the scene, the adrenalin must have been pumping amongst the crew members on the twelve Clipper yachts participating in the 40 000 mile race, many of whom are amateurs, sailing under the guidance of an experienced skipper. During the course of the 11 month long race, the yachts will visit 15 ports on six continents.

(Grateful thanks to Hans and Denise for this glorious opportunity.)

The pictures tell the story…
