The Yangtze in this story is not China’s biggest waterway but is the magical setting for this book in the backwoods of Quebec, Canada.
The story tells of the happy days of long school holidays, in particular of the main characters Nancy and Andrew. Nancy is always getting into trouble whilst Andrew seems to be able to avoid it.
Karen Wallace eases you into turning the pages of this book by her often humorous description of the various characters and the plot.
An underlying theme of the book is that of children confronted with festering secrets of grown ups, the humour and growing awareness of children becoming teenagers and the mystery of sexuality which surrounds development.
A good read for junior teens.
