The Muizenberg Historical Society was formed in 1984 by local conservation activists to foster an understanding and appreciation of the many historical aspects of False Bay, and in particular the heritage of Muizenberg.  In 1999 the Society became a Section 21 Company, so as to provide a more formal structure to deal with fund raising, conservation restoration and the many threats through development of loss of historically significant property. A Board of Directors was appointed, and has been reappointed annually in terms of a Memorandum of Association. The Board have the sole responsibility of managing the business of the organisation, with delegating powers.

The Society’s objectives as stated in the constitution are

  • To foster and promote interest in the historical past of Southern Africa
  • To hold meetings at which historical and other lectures may be given
  • To arrange excursions and visits to sites or buildings of an historic nature
  • To support other organisations, societies and individuals that have objectives similar to those of the Society, and to support properly researched and motivated historical conservation efforts
  • To encourage and assist in the collection and preservation of information and records of historic importance, and recommend that such records be lodged with an appropriate institution.
  • To disseminate the objectives and achievements of the Society, the publication of its research and activities in its own publications as well as by other means.
  • To preserve and make appropriate use of and their precincts.
