Programmes on offer at Masiphumelele Library:
Wordworks:
This is an NGO that supports early literacy development through the following projects:
1. Reading Enrichment: The facilitator and 12 volunteers work through an organized reading enrichment programme with Grades 1 and 2 once a week.
2. Hero Book Programme: The children write and illustrate their own books with themselves as the hero.
Homework Club: The children are helped with their homework and do exercises and games to improve their reading, maths and writing skills.
Literacy: Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the adult literacy programme so that while the parents attend classes, the children can enjoy stories and activities. Outreach activities take place every afternoon for primary school children – stories, activities, games, puzzles and films. The Computer classes are held 4 times a week.
Tutoring is being arranged for high school pupils who have completed a 3 week Careers Indaba programme in the July holidays. Tutors are needed. Art Club meets once a month to learn new art techniques.
Friendship Club: We invite young children from the Valley to meet on the last Friday of the month at Masiphumelele Library for an afternoon of fun and games.
