In 2010, Living Way, in partnership with Metropolitan Health Group, launched the Five Loaves Bakery, based on the bakery-within-a-container concept. The goal was to create an opportunity to train people in baking skills and to journey with a select few to own the business.
Originally, Five Loaves Bakery began by employing two people, training them with the skills to run the bakery into the future. Once established these bakers were to eventually train other bakers who would carry their skills into their own communities and develop bakeries within this structure.
Since the early beginnings of Five Loaves Bakery the original vision has evolved. After initially training 9 bakers it was observed that many of the bakers did not have a business mindset and initiative to continue forward. In April 2012, Mark Jansen came on board to further develop the bakery and eventually become full owner.
Mark comes with an extensive background in corporate business and is excited to run with this new venture. In 2008, he was privileged to be invited by the Louis Group take part in their Business Academy. He completed this course successfully and is currently studying towards a Higher Certificate in Business Leadership through the Cornerstone Institute. Running parallel to this is his ongoing development in the Accelerated Coach Training Process of the Transformational Leadership Institute.
Together with two bakers, Mark will build Five Loaves Bakery to become a successful and important part of the surrounding communities. Currently, the bakery supplies bread into the local communities to sponsor’s and coordinator’s feeding schemes and children’s programs.
Mark’s immediate vision is to increase production in this area as well as developing other clientele that will help to financially sustain the bakery. His long term vision is to see Five Loaves Bakery bring economic empowerment through training to future bakers as well as providing a hand-up to the local communities by being a vibrant supplier of delicious baked goods at reasonable pricing including skills transfer and job creation.
Their current range includes White Bread, Brown Bread, Cocktail Hot Dog and Hamburger Rolls, Regular Hot Dog and Hamburger Rolls. Some exciting new products such Ciabatta variants, Sourdough, Rye Bread variants, Croissants and Focaccia are being launched soon.
The areas Five Loaves Bakery is currently serving are Masiphumelele, Red Hill, Ocean View, Fish Hoek and Kommetjie.
