A trivial comedy for serious people – or was it the other way round?
“The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 07 November. This play is a witty and evergreen comedy that has delighted audiences in countless productions since it first opened in 1895.
The plot revolves around two men who pretend to be people they are not in order to escape social obligations they’d rather not deal with. These lies land them in hot water with their fiancés and a monster-like future mother-in-law.
Directed by Barbara Basel, “The Importance of Being Earnest” promises to be very entertaining and a must-see at the Masque Theatre this spring. Its high farce and witty wordplay have ensured that this script is Wilde’s most enduringly popular work.
The highlights of this play are the light-hearted ingenuity of the plot and the humorous dialogue. “Girls never marry the men they flirt with. … It accounts for the extraordinary number of bachelors that one sees all over the place.” “You don’t seem to realise that in married life three is company and two is none.”
“The Importance of Being Earnest” is presented by Muizenberg Dramatic Society. The production opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 07 November and runs until Saturday 15 November – excluding Sunday to Wednesday.
