INVITE YOU TO A PUBLIC LECTURE BY
Dr Simon van Noort,
Department of Natural History, Iziko South African Museum,
entitled
‘Exploring the wonderful world of wasps – a hidden microcosm of intrigue’
‘Wasps are super-diverse with 20 000 species described from Africa alone, but hundreds of thousands of species await discovery and description entailing exciting field expeditions into remote areas of this vast continent. The talk will showcase the microscopic lives of this biologically diverse group of insects as well as the field work and research undertaken to discover and document Africa’s wasps. I will touch on some of the fascinating biological interactions including the life styles of marine wasps and fig wasp pollinators and will explore the spectacular diversity of form and colour present in this group of ecologically important insects. These WOW factors of colours and structures are documented through special photographic techniques that provide a unique insight into a rarely appreciated nano-world.’
