When former president Nelson Mandela fell ill earlier this year the eMzantsi creative team felt that this was the year to pay tribute to him.  He was written into the theme for 2013 as narrator for the ‘eMzantsi Wonderland’ story which was developed to celebrate the unique places, animals and plant life found in the Far South Peninsula.

Together with fellow NGO Friends of Masi High we developed a partnership where eMzantsi recycled art workshops were  incorporated into the Life Skills curriculum giving 104 Grade 8 and 9 learners the opportunity to learn visual art, 2D art making and creating their own 3D puppet.  In a series of workshops held at the schools since August, the learners of Masiphumelele High developed and worked on elements of the Madiba puppet and Love Parade Float which will be showcased in this year’s carnival.

It is with sad hearts that we found out about his passing last night but will pay homage and display the spirit of Ubuntu in full glory in the parade tomorrow.  Come and see the life-size Madiba puppet giving out love hearts to spectators displaying love as only he would.
