Earth Hour is celebrated worldwide and this year the Muizenberg Moonlight Meander is participating in this growing event on Saturday March 23rd.
Walkers who bring empty glass jars will each receive an Earth Hour candle and after the Moonlight Meander beachfront restaurants will host Earth Hour candlelit dinners. The walk starts at 6.15 pm on Muizenberg’s beachfront outside Knead restaurant, and lasts approximately one hour, although it may be extended to the river if requested.
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned off their lights for one hour to take a stand against climate change. A year later, Earth Hour had become a global event with more than 50 million people across 35 countries taking part.
Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour encourages people to go ‘beyond the hour’ by committing to on-going action for the good of the planet. Earth Hour 2012 launched the ‘I Will If You Will’ campaign on YouTube, and saw more than 6,950 cities and towns in 152 countries (Zimbabwe was added last year!) and territories switching off their lights.
“The truth is” say WWF-SA, “we are living as if we have an extra planet at our disposal. We are using 50% more resources than the Earth can sustainably produce. Unless we change course, that number will grow fast: by 2030 not even two planets will be enough to support our consumption. We cannot continue to use the equivalent of 1.5 times the planet’s natural resources and we can’t afford to ignore the critical environmental challenges facing us. Now is the time to switch over to more sustainable ways of living. Challenge yourself, your friends and family to support this effort by joining the Muizenberg Moonlight Meander and other Earth Hour events, and switching off your lights for one hour.” More information about Earth Hour can be found at www.facebook.com/earthhour
Entry to the Moonlight Meander is free, any donations to Safer Together, the organizers, will be used for community benefit projects.
