The Scenic South – What’s in a name?
Abbreviated by Cape Point, energized by the Storms of the `Fairest Cape in all the world”, the Scenic South at the south western extremity of the African continent is `scenic ‘ every sense of the word. The Far South Peninsula, or Scenic South as we prefer to call it, is our home. Using the connecting and information sharing technology of the internet, the Scenic South community website aims to connect all Our People, give a voice to Our Passions, and celebrate Our Pastimes to encourage a united, informed and active community.
Your positive active involvement will contribute to making Scenic South relevant and current.
I would love to receive original articles from you about issues significant to you or to our communities and photos that celebrate life in the Scenic South.
About me:
Having grown up in Welkom, starved of the ocean and mountains, I relish living in the Scenic South! I feel so lucky to to be surrounded by these glorious mountains full of hiking trails, cycle tracks and breathtaking vistas, by two oceans inviting me to bodysurf, snorkel and kayak and by people who like me, do not feel compelled to dress to the nines when leaving home!
Fifteen years ago I trained as a hatha yoga teacher and have been teaching from my home studio since then, loving the teaching and my inspiring and great hearted students. (https://scenicsouth.co.za//business-index-2/health-fitness/mental-physical-wellbeing/)
A 4-year foray into the business world in a field foreign to all my experience and my nature may have etched “character lines” on my face and highlighted my hair somewhat silvery, but I learnt skills and became involved in projects that I would never otherwise have considered. One of the projects I thoroughly enjoyed was the creating and publishing of my annual community booklets “The Scenic South in Focus” out of which this website has grown.
In early Nov 2009 a friend, Kim Kruyshaar, and I were excited to see our brainchild scenicsouth.co.za come online. Apart from growing out of the booklets, scenicsouth.co.za also grew out of our shared passion for Fish Hoek and the scenic South Peninsula, a desire to do our bit to help connect the diverse communities living here and to spread the message of healthy, green, sustainable and conscious living. Kim is an environmentalist and her insights and well-written and well-researched articles on our site have proved to be very popular. She resigned from the Scenic South after three years in order to focus on establishing a ‘Green Auditing’ business and to do more on the ground enviro work.
Our “technical support team” deserves mention. My long-suffering husband Harry, who has a love for things technical and incomprehensible and challenging – has done a great deal to rescue us when we have become almost purple with perplexity and explosive with exasperation – neither Kim nor I being fundies behind the computer. And Janine Meyer from Bounce Design, our first and ever supportive web designer, deserves accolades for her patience in fixing pages “gone wonky”, finding posts “gone missing” and tutoring us in the technicalities of this awesome technology.
Neil McCreadie of Inkfish has created an exciting new image for scenicsouth.co.za- with great tenacity and equanitmity- and I look forward to many years of assocation with him and his team.
