Never one to shy away from a challenge, Mavericks Big Wave Champion, professional Speaker and current Stand Up Paddle (SUP) 12hr Open Ocean Guinness World Record Holder Chris Bertish will once again be off on his SUP board to set a new record. This time it’s the 12 hour SUP Flat Water record , something never done before in South Africa. In true Chris fashion, he will be doing the 12 hour record attempt all in aid of Cipla Miles for Smiles in preparation for his 3rd attempt at the 24 hour Open Ocean World Record that is set to take place in late June/July this year, off the Marine Sanctuary of Vilanculos, Mozambique.

“I’m excited to attempt setting this new record, as it gives me such a great foundation to build on for the upcoming third attempt at the 24hr World record and will just remind me and help me be more mindful of the numerous obstacles I need to be cautious of, in order to achieve this goal,” says Chris Bertish. “It’s not going to be easy, but every mile I paddle I will be raising awareness for children born with Cleft lips and palates, and the necessary funds to pay for the operations to help change these kids’ lives forever. That’s the best reason in the world to do this.

“It would be easier to attempt this record in the daylight hours, but this won’t help me prepare for the night time obstacles we have to endure for the 24hr record, which seems to be the hardest stage of the 24hr World Record I am training for, so I decided to attempt the new 12hr flat water record at night. Sometimes it’s not about doing what’s easier, but rather what is right and will make you better prepared!”

Chris will be starting his attempt at 5:30pm this evening and will be paddling straight through the night, until 5:30am  the following morning at an undisclosed venue, in Cape Town. On the 21st of May, the movie, Ocean Driven, about Chris’s inspirational story and lead up to his monumental win at the Mavericks Big Wave Competition in 2010, will be airing at the 2015 San Diego Surf Film Festival and will be coming to SA in November/December this year.
