Saturday, 1 December at 11am

Kalk Bay Books & Jacana Media
invite our younger readers
to a special Saturday morning reading
of

Oscar Wilde’s
The Happy Prince
adapted by
Carole Bloch and Margaret Sixel

with illustrations by
Joan Rankin

The Happy Prince, Oscar Wilde’s classic children’s tale,
has been adapted and translated for a new generation of South African Children.
We hope you can join us for the launch and reading.

Oscar Wilde’s timeless, compassionate tale of the friendship between the Happy Prince
and the Swallow is brought to life by Joan Rankin’s sensitive, magical artwork.
Beloved since it was first published in 1888, this enchanting story will be enjoyed by both adults and children.

From his high pedestal, the Happy Prince, a magnificent golden statue, can see all
the misery of the city below him. He begs a little Swallow to pluck off his treasure and
share it amongst the poor. When the Happy Prince asks his new friend to stay and help him,
the Swallow receives a lesson in kindness and caring.

The story has been adapted by Carole Bloch and Margaret Sixel,
and translated into Afrikaans by Antjie Krog and isiXhosa by Pamela Maseko.

Carole will read from the book at the Saturday morning event, and the children
will participate in a special drawing activity.

Carole Bloch and Margaret Sixel developed the book in conjunction with The Little Hands Trust and PRAESA. The Little Hands Trust supports initiatives that promote reading for enjoyment.
They collaborate with African publishers to increase and sustain publications of children’s books in African languages, as well as to initiate and support translations of classic children’s stories.

Dad, Don’t Go to Work

by
Paul Benjamin

Dennis Davis will be in conversation with Paul at the launch

Paul Benjamin and his son Saien’s shared love for verse began with the enjoyment of reading
Dr Seuss books together. As a release from his ‘day job’ as a lawyer, Paul returned to writing poetry, this time inspired by fatherhood. The result is Dad, Don’t Go to Work.

This humorous and incisive collection of poetry celebrates the joys of childhood and of being a father.  From family outings to cricket on the lawn, sharing time with each other the heartache of saying goodbye, this collection will be loved by parents and children alike.

It is ideal for quiet enjoyment or reading aloud.
