Bite-Sized Butterfly

Highlights from Puccini’s Madam Butterfly

Since its first performance at La Scala in 1904 , when it was very poorly received, Madam Butterfly has been a favourite of Opera audiences all over the world.

Casa Labia is delighted to present Sidwill Hartman (tenor) and Lan Wang (soprano) , supported by students from the University of cape Town Opera School in this charming concert version of Madam Butterfly.

Victor Trichardt (piano)

Born in China, Lan Wang studied piano at the Suzhou Normal University before specialising in singing at the National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kiev, in the Ukraine. Since 2009, she has been a student of Professor Hartman at the College of Music University of Cape Town.

While at the academy she sang Nedda in ‘Pagliacci’ and Flora in ‘La Traviata’ in 2006 and 2007, and won third place at the “Art in the 21st Century” competition in Vorzel in Ukraine. At the beginning of 2011 she performed Chinese traditional songs as a soloist with chorus at the Huaxia theatre in Shenzhen in China. Later that year she was one of the finalists in the 6th Shizuoka International Opera Competition in Japan.

Since an auspicious start to his career, when as a young singer he joined the Eoan Opera Company, Sidwill Hartman has delighted Cape Town audiences with his interpretations of many romantic tenor roles, not least Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly. Hartman has made Pinkerton his own, singing it not only in South Africa but also in Europe.
