The two lead singers of the popular bands Wonderboom and Sugardrive, Cito and Paul E. Flynn, have joined forces on an elaborate musical journey. They call the outfit Absinthè; a name that perfectly embodies the spirit of the project.

The concept is simple. No originals, just covers.

With Absinthè, they have taken a supper club approach to some of their favourite songs from the last century. Absinthè is a laid-back meeting of two unique voices and acoustic guitars. Intended to charm those in an unplugged environment, Absinthè has entertained music lovers around Johannesburg with an awesome show of great alternative classics to contemporary favourites.

Through jamming together, Paul andAbsinthe Duo show at Kalk Bay Theatre Cito found that they had similar taste in music. Reminiscing about the alternative clubbing days at Le Club, The White Horse Inn, The Doors and Alcatraz, brought back the memories of the dance floor, heartbreak and escape. Cito and Flynn thought it’d be a unique concept to keep them busy and having fun interpreting mutually admired songs by their great legendary influences such as, Joy Division, the Verve, Pixies, Placebo, House of Love, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Johnny Cash, The Mission and many others.

Absinthè is a more mature entertainment option for the discerning audience. Cito and Paul have chosen this format to pay tribute to a way of life, and some great music, with their own unique signature.

With a powerhouse set-up from the two lead singers of the popularbands Wonderboom and Sugardrive, Cito and Paul E. Flynn have been teasing South African audiences with very select shows from their group, Absinthè, over the past 2 years. June 2012 sees the group releasing their long-awaited Music Video for the Joy Division hit, “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, as well as announcing some intimate live performance dates in the Cape for July.

The beautifully crafted music video for “Love Will Tear Us Apart” tells a love-tragedy story through the use of shadow puppetry images and a melancholic aural interpretation of the classic song. The single is taken from Absinthè’s Double CD release “A Rendezvous at Nirvana”, which includes stunning acoustic renditions of other great songs from the likes of  the Pixies, Kings Of Leon, Leonard Cohen, Placebo and Depeche Mode to name a few.

Cito explains the creation and ideas behind the “Love Will Tear Us Apart” music video: “The love, passion and talent that Bradley Devine has put into this video is undoubtedly manifested through the expression of shadow-puppetry in a fable-like love tragedy. Our audio recording of Love Will Tear Us Apart  needed the visuals that complimented the melancholic yet endearing performance that we gave and this video completes the experience. The powerful video-making partnership between Rowan Cloete (online editor) and Bradley Devine (director, designer and editor) is wonderfully depicted in our first music video. We are thrilled that Bradley chose an Absinthe music video for his director debut, and are so pleased with the outcome.”

Fans in Cape Town will be delighted as Absinthè head to the Mother City for some shows from the 12th to 15th of July.

“Finally, Paul and I get to bring Absinthè to the beautiful Cape! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while and have always believed that the Cape audiences would embrace our vibe. I’ve seen some great unplugged, intimate performances in the smallest and quaintest of venues in Cape Town and it will be an honour to contribute to that! We seem to have fans in the Mother City that have been hounding us to come. So, voila!!! Here we come!” exclaims Cito excitedly.
