Robin Mailer’s entry, “I think they are finally starting to see our fun side”, has won him the prize for the best caption for the photo of the model Great White in soccer kit at the Save Our Seas Shark Center in St James. He arrived at the Center with his daughter Alexander to collect the magnificent coffee table book “Wild Seas, Secret Shores”, photography & text by Thomas Peschak, which was donated by Save Our Seas.
In all, 22 entries were received for the photo caption competition. For interest, entries that were highly ranked, but which did not make the judges final selection include:
“Great Whites support SA tourism – why not support them?” by Bernard Haupt
“Go BaFINa BaFINa” by Michelle Preen
“Hmm, should have listened to that octopus instead of eating him. Could have made a fortune with the bookies.” By Jennifer Stern
“Just no Mexican waves please!” by Robin Mailer
“Not all soccer sharks are football agents! Shark! Shark!” by Graham Falken
“Jaws truly’ looking sharp in this soccer gear, don’t you think?” by Sherry Woods
“Even the Great parted with their grey jackets to stand united in yellow and green.” by Sanet
“They wouldn’t let me play even after I ate Bennie McCarthy!” by Silke Carstensen
A big thank you from the teams at The Scenic South and from Save our Seas Shark Center in St James to all the participants. Watch out for the next competition – soon to be announced on scenicsouth.co.za.
Note that the Save Our Seas Shark Center in St James is being refurbished. Although it is still open for business, the educational programme will only be fully operational from the third week of August. For enquiries phone Meg at
