KALK BAY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION
SCHEDULE OF TALKS FOR 2012 – 13
1. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PENINSULA RESORTS 1910 – 1939.
PART 2: THE FALSE BAY COAST
DATE: Tuesday 29 May 2012 at 8pm
VENUE: The Bible Institute of SA, 180 Main Road, Kalk Bay
SPEAKER: Barrie Gasson
The development of Peninsula resorts drew much of its inspiration from Brighton, UK, where the healthy seaside air and various amenities attracted families from the crowded industrial cities for their summer holidays. Piers at which tripper boats could berth, pavilions for mass entertainments, promenades for strolling and socialising, together with the convenience of a rail station and holiday accommodations, all provided a template for success that municipalities here sought to emulate.
This illustrated talk will cover Muizenberg, St James & Kalk Bay; Fish Hoek, Glencairn and Simon’s Town – Seaforth; and Somerset Strand.
2. MOUNTAIN CABLEWAYS AND RAILWAYS OF THE CAPE PENINSULA
DATE: Tuesday 31 July 2012 at 8pm
VENUE: The Bible Institute of SA, 180 Main Road, Kalk Bay
SPEAKERS: Louis de Waal
Mountain cableways and railways, for recreational purposes, were mooted from the early 1900s onward, following the trend in Europe. Only the Table Mountain cableway was constructed for this purpose. But they were built also for practical purposes, particularly access to the naval hospital at Red Hill, reservoir construction in the high catchments on the Back Table and above Wynberg, and sometimes mining and quarrying operations at Lakeside and Fish Hoek.
Louis de Waal is very knowledgeable about this field and will provide an illustrated talk on the subject.
3. A SOCIAL HISTORY OF “DIE DAM” AREA, KALK BAY, 1800s – 1940
DATE: Tuesday 30 October 2012 at 8pm
VENUE: The Bible Institute of SA, 180 Main Road, Kalk Bay
SPEAKER: Steve Herbert
“Die Dam” was one of two areas in Kalk Bay that were occupied predominantly by the fishing community. It comprises the area around the Lever Street park, and the stream where a public wash-house was built in 1901. Over time it became a major social focus in the village housing places of worship, court-house, post office, shops, boarding houses and homes.
Steve Herbert has researched deeply into archival and family records and will give an illustrated talk on the topic.
