This is a book about a brother and sister, Elly and Joe, who have a close and loving relationship. Both are unusual and don’t find it easy to fit in at school. They are protective of each other. The rabbit is given to Elly by Joe to alleviate her loneliness. He names the rabbit, God – which gets Ellie into trouble at school when she talks about it. The book is well-written, charming and easy to read. The siblings  develop depth as we follow them into their adulthood. There are some lovely quirky characters who become their friends – Jenny-Penny, Nancy, Arthur, who knows he will die by being hit on the head by a coconut and Ginger.

This is Winan’s first novel but her writing is confident and the book is as original as its title. I‘ll look out for more books by her.
