Here are the pictures of the Seagwarrie – Euclea racemosa – that was spotted in the Silvermine Wetlands.
We think it is about 500 yrs old, which would pre-date Jan van Riebeeck. This would make it, probably, the oldest tree in the Fish Hoek Valley!
It is still producing seeds, some of which have been taken by the City for propagation, so we won’t lose the tree completely. It will be given Heritage status by the City and therefore protection.
