I met with Michele Koch at her beautiful home in and discovered that, apart from running a sought after accommodation business, she was a ceramicist of note.

Her studio is full of delicate handmade cups and saucers, vases, Christmas decorations, wedding decorations and mugs, the latest in the latter range being her Movember Mugs which Michele is “modeling” below.

Michele imprints vintage lace from old garments into the clay to create exquisite, unique pieces. She also makes use of interweaving leaf shapes on her vases and vessels hiding delightful little bugs, roses, hearts and angels amongst them. She also sometimes uses materials from her clients own treasure chests.

LOVE & LACE Ceramics by Michelle Koch of Kommetjie in the Scenic South

“Growing up in a creative family, my mom and gran making our clothes, I learnt to love making things with my hands. Art lessons at school introduced me to a variety of different modes of expression and although I did a bit of painting, painting does not grab me. My love is pottery – trying different glazes, working with different temperatures and different kilns. There have been times when I have wanted to give it up but 24 hours later I am back in my studio again. Working with clay is so therapeutic!”

Michele became serious about doing ceramics and pottery about 25 years ago, honing her natural talent under the mentorship of Lorretta Espi in Noordhoek for four years. She has since taught mini-courses at Fish Hoek High School and run pottery classes in Fish Hoek and Kommetjie.

Her other passions include horse-riding, gardening (her colourful garden has delightful mobiles of shells and pottery hanging from branches) and walking on the beach
