A literary conversation

with
Lyndall Gordon & Michiel Heyns
Michiel Heyns, SA’s foremost Jamesian,
will discuss the Master with
his biographer, Lyndall Gordon.

Gordon’s Henry James: His Women and His Art creates a new form of biography in which
outward events are peeled back to glimpse unseen collaborators.
Lyndall Gordon seeks out the hidden stories of two women – women vital to the Master’s art,
who were kept under wraps.
In 1894 Henry James tried to drown a boatload of dresses belonging to the writer
Constance Fenimore Woolson in the Venetian lagoon.
She had fallen to her death from her Venice window three months before.

James’s elusive friendship with Fenimore echoed his mysterious relationship with Minny Temple who had died 20 years earlier at the age of 24. From their graves they haunted his imagination, Minny inspiring the heroines of A Portrait of a Lady and The Wings of the Dove, while Fenimore was resurrected in his stories and in his very vision of a writer’s life.

Michiel Heyns is one of SA’s most respected experts on James,
having studied and lectured on the man and his works for many years,
and also having been influenced by him in his own writing, most directly in his novel,

The three wise men, the gifts, the loneliness, the spirit, the wonder:
everything you’ve ever loved and feared about Christmas,
rendered in two of Cape Town’s most sublime voices.
