The Friends of Good Hope will be having an all-day geological outing from Hout Bay to Cape Point on September 17 at 8am.
This will be an all-day trip starting in Hout Bay, going through Chapman’s Peak and ending up in Cape Point. There will be 7 stops where the geology will be explained. Dr John Rogers will enlighten us about cross-bedding, faulting, the nonconformity between Cape Granite and the Table Mountain Group sandstones.
At Misty Cliffs we will see a rare outcrop of crossbedded Peninsula Formation sandstones and angular talus (rockfalls) beside a raised boulder beach, indicating a high sea level about 2 million years ago at road level.
At Smitswinkel the fault and the tilt of the TMS will be pointed out. The formations at Diaz Beach will be explained and the trip will end at the raised boulder beach at the Cape of Good Hope.
Cost : R10 per person.
