The Cape of Good Hope Rotary Club (aka Cape of Storms – due to the weather we experienced on the day!) successfully countered the untimely wind and rain to host yet another fantastic Dragon Boat Regatta at the Royal Yacht Club, Zandvlei, in October when 36 teams raced against each other to claim the prized 1st Overall trophy which was held by the Brass Bell team for the past two years.

This is a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club and the surplus of R108, 000 which was raised is to be donated to cancer associated charities.

The Rotary Club is deeply indebted to all the wonderful sponsors who gave so generously – some for the first time, but many as a continued support over many years and to the rowing teams who battled the elements with such enthusiasm.

In addition, the race was extremely well controlled by the Western Province Dragon Boat Association under the watchful and professional eye of Abdul Edross. They provided the six boats, together with the required drummers and steerers.

The festive atmosphere with tents and gazebo’s in every empty space, was never dampened by the intermittent squalls and wind flurries – in fact they helped to “cook up a storm” of enthusiastic support from all the team’s supporters and hangers on.

The final Rose Dedication Ceremony gave a poignant and emotional end to the day when 600 roses were cast upon the water – all in honour of all those who have been affected by Cancer.

Final race winners were:

  • 1st Overall   – Infoprop False Bay
  • 2nd Overall  – FFS Refiners
  • 3rd Overall   – Aveng Grinaker – Team 3
