I am ashamed to admit that after living in Cape Town for 30 years we experienced the Minstrel Carnival – the traditional Tweede Nuwe Jaar two days late -ltoday for the first time. It was a very happy event – animated families settled since 8am this morning or even earlier under gazebos and umbrellas along the route followed by the minstrels, surrounded by blankets and picnic baskets and young children oblivious in an exhausted sleep.

We left after more than two hours having seen about 10 of the groups come through. What colourful and joyful groups they were, old and young dancing to the tunes of their musicians and putting on a show for the crowds.

This little girl amongst the onlookers was somewhat taken aback by some of the minstrels wearing costumes more appropriate for Halloween.

Wile this one came by riding on the shoulders of her dad, one of the onlookers.
